THOMAS BERNHARD

Fäulnis

Decay

Everlasting, like the sun, I saw the earth
as I returned to sleep, in search of the father
who brought the last wind's message
to my abject state, which grieved his glory,
the glory of which he said: "Great destinies
fail for tomorrow . .."
Everlasting stood the woods, which once filled
the night with their laments and their talk
of young wine and doom. Only the wind
was above the ears of corn, as if spring lived
in the midst of this sweet decay.
Der Schnee verhielt sich feindlich und ließ
meine Glieder erschauern beim Anblick
des unruhigen Nordens, der einem riesigen unerschöpflichen
Friedhof glich, dem Friedhof der Gefangenen
dieser Errungenschaft, die sich
in jedes Wegkreuz einschlich, in jeden Ackerstein
The snow, acting like an adversary, made
my limbs shiver at the sight
of the fretful north, resembling a huge inexhaustible
graveyard, a graveyard of the prisoners
of this achievement that crept
into every wayside cross, into every fieldstone
and all country roads and churches, whose spires
rose up against God, and against the wedding society
which sat around its wine barrel, intent
on drinking it dry to the sound of swinish laughter.

Ich hörte den langsamen Atem der Verkommenheit
zwischen den Hügeln . . .
How I saw all these village dead, bellies swollen,
eating red meat on the boards,
slurring their hymns to the March beer,
and the decay which crept through the tavern garden
beneath the sluggish bellow of the trumpet . . .
I heard the slow breath of debauchery
between the hills. . .
Everlasting, like the sun, I saw the earth,
its August sick and irretrievable
for me and my brothers—they learned
their trades better than I, tormented as I am
by millions of beggarly things and now unable
to find even a tree for my crazy conversations.
I left a night of hell
to enter a night of heaven,
not knowing who would have to shatter my life
before it were too late to speak of glory and bravery,
of the poverty and earthly despair
of the flesh that will destroy me. . .
