PETR FERENC, KRISTUPAS GIKAS & MARTIN JANIČEK

Broken Music Feedback Concert

Turntablists Petr Ferenc and Kristupas Gikas will join multimedia performer Martin Janíček for a performance at the Punctum club. This event will feature Milan Knížák’s broken music, a wild turntable collage, and sound spirals.

Petr Ferenc (aka Phaerentz) is an electronic musician, curator, music critic and promoter. He has been working with sound and different kinds of media, making use of various music players, particularly turntables and prepared vinyl records. He was a founding member of the band Birds Build Nests Underground, which combined compositions for turntables, improvisation, and record destruction with improvised projections on 8 mm, 16 mm, 35 mm, and KP8 film stock. He collaborated regularly with the Opening Performance Orchestra. Ferenc co-founded HIS Voice magazine (2001), Stimul Festival (2005) and Wakushoppu concert series (2011–2020). He currently works as Head of Documentation Centre for Popular Music and New Media at the National Museum in Prague. In his solo work, he has been particularly interested in the specifics of individual media: each has its own charm, specific colour of sound and unique characteristics in terms of repetition, randomness and reproduction sensitivity.

In his performance at the Punctum club, Petr Ferenc will use his favourite turntables and original broken vinyl records by Milan Knížák, with whom he has performed several times in the past in the broken music program.

Martin Janíček is sound – artist, sculptor, musician and sound designer works in the field of exploration of acoustic qualities of various materials – new music instrument – builder. Most of his works feature interactive quality in connection with concentrated-simple form. Conceptually bounded with site-specific character of working. Born in 1961, originally trained at bronze foundry, Studied Academy of Fine Arts in Prague 1990-97, later worked as assistant of professor Milos Šejn at Conceptual Department of AFA, Prague for 6 years. Since 1998 collaborations with mamapapa ngo, numerous site-specific projects in Czech Republic and abroad – unused spaces and social issues – minorities, homeless, endangered languages.
Since 2012 personal projects, using architecture – “Galegion”- Dox Prague, “singing Buildings-Tbilisi, Georgia, ”Sounds of Rain” – Berlin, Germany, “Sounds of Space”- Festival in Mariánská Týnice

In his musical performance at the Punctum club, he will explore options and limitations of the spiral system of audio recording.

Kristupas Gikas is a Lithuanian musician, improviser, sound artist, and record producer, playing the flutes, turntables, and electronics. He studied classical, contemporary, and electroacoustic music at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre and the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, and is currently pursuing a PhD in improvised electroacoustic music (LMTA). His work involves solo performances, interdisciplinary art projects, and ensemble collaborations (Fleitų 3, Artisans, Ferry Good Company).

Kristupas is also active in sound installation art, having exhibited at galleries such as die Raum (Berlin) and Contour Art Gallery (Vilnius). His innovative approach, otherworldly sound quality, unorthodox use of instruments, and cross-disciplinary collaborations establish him as a key figure in Lithuania’s experimental music scene.
In the performance in Prague, you encounter three turntables (ab)used as a rotating playground for your deepest sonic curiosities, where repetition and disruption, control and chance, dreams and insanity unfold in shifting balance.

Organized by AΩ Production with support from the Broken Music Feedback Endowment Fund. Broken Music Feedback Endowment Fund, Ječná 516/28, 120 00 Prague 2, Czech Republic | Registered under number N 2769 at the Municipal Court in Prague | T: +420 721 820 377 | Email
