In 2013, I ran a small experiment in mistranslation. I took a dry, preferably forgettable text on operational risk management, the kind of prose written to be filed rather than read, and had my phone read it aloud. My Computer listened and transcribed what it heard, turning speech back into text. Then I did the reverse: I had the Computer read its own transcription aloud, and had my phone transcribe that. Back and forth, speech to text to speech to text, again and again

Neither device was built for this. Each one heard the other imperfectly, guessed at unclear words, and smoothed over gaps with whatever seemed statistically plausible. Small errors accumulated. A phrase about “risk exposure” became something about “rising exposure,” then “rising water,” then simply “the water rising.” Bureaucratic language, run through enough cycles of mishearing, started to shed its bureaucracy. What began as a paragraph about controls, thresholds, and compliance slowly drifted into something closer to a fragment of verse, image-driven, rhythmic, and most of all strange.

By the time I stopped, there was nothing left of the original document. Every trace of its meaning had been eroded by the process, and something else had grown in its place, unintentional, but oddly coherent. It read like a poem written by two machines passing a thought back and forth until neither remembered where it started.

I think of the piece now as a kind of accidental collaboration between speech recognition and speech synthesis, two systems talking past each other until their errors became a style. It says something about how meaning survives, or doesn’t, when it passes through systems built to approximate rather than understand. The technical language of risk management, it turns out, was only ever a few mistranslations away from poetry.
