When Today Becomes The Past: The Archive as a Healing Process
South African Jazz Cultures and the Archive was a two-year project funded by a British Academy Newton Advanced Fellowship award and was set up to facilitate a critical engagement with current archival initiatives across a range of stakeholders for South African jazz. It ran for two years (2014-2016) and was jointly organised by the Department of Music at the University of York, and Africa Open Institute for Music, Research and Innovation. A series of interdisciplinary discussion days (in both South Africa and the UK) were held, and a series of interviews with musicians were undertaken that focused on musical thinking and musical priorities, rather than socio-historical information. The project also provided two fully funded masters studentships.
