ZEINAB SHAATH
The Urgent Call of Palestine
Majazz Project/Palestine sound archive and @discostan are honored to partner with Palestinian resistance singer Zeinab Shaath to reissue a piece of Palestinian sonic history. More than 50 years ago in Beirut, teenager Zeinab Shaath recorded a set of revolutionary folk music — the first English-language songs to lift up the Palestinian cause to the wider world. Inspired by Vietnam-era protest music from Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, “The Urgent Call of Palestine’’ record was intended to share the stories and messages of Palestinian resistance to an international audience.
The full 4-track 7” has been carefully restored by Michael Graves @osirisstudio. The original music video was shot and edited by the legendary Palestinian artist Ismail Shammout, Arabic typography by Mohammed Naseem. Read South African DJ and journalist Charles Leonard’s interview with Zeinab Shaath.
